Our first pamphlet, written and published in July 1996, it introduces what an Anarcho-Syndicalist union should be alongside a strategy of how we thought such a union could be achieved.

With sections on Anarchism; Revolutionary Syndicalism; Party Politics and the State; The Environment; Globalisation; Anarcho-Syndicalism and the Trades Unions; Locals; Industrial Networks; Workers Militia; World-wide Anarcho-Syndicalism – The International Workers Association; The Principles of Revolutionary Syndicalism; Ends and Objectives of the IWA; Organise! the Voice of Anarcho-Syndicalism; and or then current Aims and Principles this wee pamphlet still has a lot of value. Along with a lot that could be updated.

Organise! is an anarchist political group in Ireland who take inspiration from the self directed struggles of working-class people, particularly as organised on anarcho-syndicalist lines. Our history goes back to the original formation of Organise! by the Ballymena and Antrim Anarchist Groups in 1984.

We are actively working to promote solidarity in opposition to capitalism, the state, patriarchy and all other forms of oppression and hierarchy. The way we organise reflects the free society we want to create: one based on voluntary association, democratic participation and self-management.

Our members are workers, claimants, students, migrants, unemployed and other working-class people committed to building a libertarian communist union movement actively opposed to all forms of oppression and exploitation.

We aim to promote solidarity in our workplaces and communities, encouraging people to organise independently of, and opposed to, government, bosses and bureaucrats to fight for our own interests as a class. We see libertarian communism as emerging from working-class struggles in the here and now.

Our activity is therefore aimed at promoting, assisting and developing such struggles, which both benefit our lives today and advance the movement and the future that we all deserve.

While we consider direct action to be a very effective tool in getting the owed wages back, we are aware that even if we won all owed wages, the phenomenon won’t cease to exist. The nature of the capitalist system will always play into the hand of bosses and they will try other tricks on workers. Therefore, we don’t call for “fair” wages or treatment. The problem is the wage system itself, because someone usurps the work of someone else and gives only part of its value in return. Furthermore, we don’t think that direct action itself is the goal. It is very important that it is interconnected with collective organizing, decision-making, experience sharing and generally building the culture of mutual aid.

The aim of the unions associated in the IWA is not only short-term material victories. We realize that everyday struggle against unpaid wages is just a direct response to an immediate problem. Even though we consider it a defensive struggle, it is at the same time part of our wider long-term struggle for substantial changes in society.

We want a different world. Without capitalism and its production based on profit and not people’s needs. Without hierarchies on all levels of social life which artificially divide us and are a breeding ground for inequality and oppression. And without the state which is just a reliable saviour of capitalism and holder of the power over the rest of society. To lead happy and dignified lives and develop our abilities and society as well, we don’t need either of them.
